And for dessert, bingsu, a cold dish of shaved ice with toppings like fruits and red beans, is an irresistible treat. Our experience in South Korea, following our visit to Japan, was truly amazing. The fusion of tradition and innovation in cuisine, coupled with the warm hospitality of the Koreans, made this gastronomic journey memorable.
When to visit South Korea
The best time to visit South Korea largely depends on what you’re looking for in a trip. If the goal is to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms in full bloom, spring, between March and May, is ideal. During this time, the weather is mild, and flower festivals are abundant. Autumn, from September to November, is equally charming, with vibrant foliage and comfortable temperatures.
For winter sports enthusiasts, the months of December to February offer excellent conditions for skiing, with snowy landscapes straight out of a postcard. However, if you want to avoid crowds and enjoy more affordable prices, consider visiting during the off-peak season, such as June or October. Regardless of the season, South Korea promises an experience rich in discoveries and memorable adventures.

Planning a trip to South Korea
Places
When we traveled through the country, we explored Seoul, Jeonju, and Busan. In Seoul, we immersed ourselves in the urban hustle and bustle and visited iconic spots like Gyeongbokgung Palace and Namdaemun Market. In Jeonju, we enjoyed the charming atmosphere of the traditional hanok village and explored the local cuisine, especially the famous bibimbap. In Busan, we took advantage of the stunning beaches, such as Haeundae Beach, and explored the vibrant cultural scene, including the bustling Jagalchi Market.
Although we didn’t have the opportunity to visit, we highly recommend exploring the stunning island of Jeju, known for its unique volcanic landscapes and picturesque beaches. Additionally, we suggest setting aside some time to discover the charming city of Gyeongsan, famous for its rich history and culture, including architectural treasures and authentic cultural experiences.

In South Korea, there are various accommodation options to meet the needs of visitors. From international luxury hotels to small family-run guesthouses (minbak), the choice is diverse. Additionally, there are hostels (guesthouses/hostels) that offer a more budget-friendly alternative, with shared or private rooms and common areas for socializing. A unique experience can be had in Hanoks, traditional Korean houses, providing immersion in local culture and architecture.
For those seeking a spiritual experience, Temple Stays allow guests to experience monastic life in Buddhist temples. Additionally, short-term accommodations (Goshiwon/Gositel) offer small and affordable rooms, making them a convenient option for short stays. The diversity of accommodation choices in South Korea ensures that every traveler finds an option that suits their style and budget.
Transportation
In South Korea, travelers have a wide variety of transportation options available to explore the country. The railway system, operated by the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), offers an extensive network of trains connecting major cities and regions, providing an efficient and comfortable way to travel. Additionally, buses, such as KOBUS, are an economical and convenient option for travel between cities and towns, covering even remote areas. Within cities, public transportation, including subway, buses, and trams, is widely used, offering an affordable and efficient way to get around.
We recommend using the T-money, a widely accepted transportation card in South Korea, which facilitates payments across various modes of public transportation, such as subway, bus, and taxi. The card can be purchased at convenience stores using cash only and can be recharged both at these stores and at vending machines in subway stations.
