Looking for what to do in St Helens? St Helens was our second stop on our Tasmania road trip in Australia, and it did not disappoint. This small coastal town, located along the famous Great Eastern Drive, combines stunning beaches, vibrant nature, and a relaxed vibe that makes you feel instantly at home. If you’re planning to explore the east coast on your Tasmania itinerary, this is the perfect place to be amazed by natural beauty and enjoy the best of the local culture.

With two days to explore, we uncovered the charms of St Helens, from the iconic Bay of Fires to the golden sands of Peron Dunes. Here’s our guide with everything you need to know about what to do in St Helens!

What to Do in St Helens

Day 1: On the Way to St Helens

The drive from Bicheno to St Helens along the Great Eastern Drive is an experience in itself. We started with a stop at Denison Beach, an almost deserted beach perfect for a peaceful walk with the sound of the ocean as your soundtrack.

Next, we took a break in Scamander, where we enjoyed coffee at the cozy Swims East Coast Café. The relaxed atmosphere and the caramel slice are a must-try – every calorie is worth it!

Further ahead, we visited the Peron Dunes, an impressive expanse of golden sand contrasting with the deep blue of the ocean. It’s the kind of place that leaves you speechless.

Once in St Helens, we had lunch at East Coast Village Providore, sharing a delicious platter with fresh local products paired with a fine local wine. In the afternoon, we explored the city center, which is much livelier than Bicheno. With various shops, cafés, and the marina, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxed stroll.

Day 2: Bay of Fires and More

We dedicated the second day to exploring the famous Bay of Fires, which is everything people say and more. The white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and orange-hued rocks create an unforgettable setting. We stopped at places like Binalong Bay and The Gardens, where the natural beauty makes you lose track of time.

We ended the day with dinner at The Social, a casual spot that, on that night, was serving Taiwanese-inspired dishes. The cozy atmosphere was perfect to wrap up the day in style.
