What to Do in Launceston – Discover Tasmania’s Second Largest City

Looking for what to do in Launceston? This city was one of the most surprising destinations on our Tasmania itinerary. From its rich historical heritage to its culinary delights, it has so much to offer, even for those with limited time. Here we share everything we did, saw, and tasted to inspire you to explore this special corner of Tasmania.

Discoveries Along the Way

Before arriving in Launceston, shortly after leaving St Helens, we made some memorable stops:

• The Shop in the Bush – A charming shop hidden in the woods, where you can lose yourself among old books, antiques, and small vintage treasures. It’s the kind of place that makes time stand still and fills any antique lover’s heart with joy.
• Pyengana Dairy Company – Cheese lovers, this is your paradise! We tried scones with jam, but for those arriving later, the cheese platters paired with wine are a must.
• Bridestowe Lavender Estate – Famous for its postcard-like lavender fields. We tasted lavender ice cream, and it was the perfect choice for a summer day!

We continued along the scenic A3 road, where the landscapes never disappoint. Tasmania is full of wildlife, and while driving, we kept an eye out for wallabies and wombats – unfortunately, we also saw many hit by cars. So, a word of advice: drive slowly and stay alert!

What to Do in Launceston

Once in Launceston, we started with the Queen Victoria Museum. This museum is a true journey through time, with exhibits combining local history, science, and culture. Located in the city center, it’s a great way to connect with the region’s roots.

The next day, before heading to the Tamar Valley, we stopped by City Park, a peaceful and green spot perfect for a break. Here, we found Japanese monkeys, a gift from Japan to the city – something we didn’t expect but found absolutely delightful!

Launceston is the kind of city that invites exploration on foot. Every corner reveals something special, from historic architecture to the charm of local shops and cafés.

If you have time, you can also visit:

• Cataract Gorge Reserve – One of the city’s most iconic spots, perfect for hikes, a picnic, or relaxing by the public swimming pool. Don’t miss the chairlift with its incredible views over the gorge.
• Tamar Island Wetlands – A peaceful sanctuary where you can enjoy trails and birdwatching. Ideal for those who love a relaxing walk surrounded by nature.
• Hollybank Forest Reserve – A paradise for adventurers, offering activities like hiking, biking, and even ziplining.
• Harvest Market Launceston – Held on Saturdays, this market offers fresh local produce, street food, and a lively atmosphere. We visited on a Sunday and, unfortunately, missed it.
• National Automobile Museum of Tasmania – A treasure trove for classic car and motorcycle enthusiasts.
• Launceston Tramway Museum – A chance to learn about the city’s tram history and even enjoy a ride.
• Franklin House – A beautifully preserved historic house that transports you to the 19th century.
• Boag’s Brewery Tour – Learn more about the history of James Boag’s brewery and enjoy tasting some of their beers.
• Princess Theatre – This historic theatre hosts shows, concerts, and various events, making it a perfect choice for an evening of culture.

Where to Eat in Launceston

The city’s food scene is vibrant, offering something for every taste. These were our highlights:

• Saint John Craft Beer Bar – A laid-back spot perfect for burger and craft beer lovers. We had a juicy burger that quickly became one of our favorites.
• Du Cane Brewery & Dining Hall – Neapolitan pizzas are the highlight here. The dough was perfect, and paired with craft beers, it made for a memorable meal.
• Alberto’s Espresso – Ideal for breakfast or a light lunch. The food is delicious and so beautifully presented you’ll want to take pictures before digging in.

Where to Stay in Launceston

Choosing where to stay is always an important part of planning, and Launceston offers options for every budget:

• Budget: Sporties Hotel – A simple and practical accommodation in the city center with comfortable rooms and free Wi-Fi.
• Mid-range: Balmoral on York – This is where we stayed! It offers spacious, modern rooms, excellent service, and a convenient location close to restaurants and bars.
• Luxury: Stillwater Seven – A unique boutique experience combining luxury accommodation with top-notch dining at the award-winning restaurant attached to the hotel.

Launceston won us over with its unique mix of history, great food, and stunning natural scenery. From museums to City Park, delightful meals, and the surrounding landscapes, every moment here was special.
