Looking for what to do in Adelaide? Stay with us as we share a list of experiences in Adelaide. When we planned our itinerary for Australia, there was one big question we hesitated over: should we include Sydney or not? We had loved the city during our 2020 trip, but this time, on our second round-the-world journey, we wanted to give other destinations a chance. That’s how, after our road trip through Tasmania, Adelaide made it into our plans – and we quickly realized it was the right choice.

What Makes Adelaide Special?
You’ve heard of Adelaide, but you’re not quite sure what makes it unique? That curiosity is exactly what brought us here – and it didn’t take long for us to realize that Adelaide has something special.
Let’s start with the vibe: Adelaide has its own rhythm, more relaxed than other Australian cities. Here, you’ll find the perfect blend of culture, nature, and gastronomy, without crowds or stress. It’s a vibrant city but without the chaos of major metropolises.
And then there’s the food and wine. If you’re a fan of great flavors, you’ll love Adelaide. The city is the gateway to some of Australia’s best wine regions, such as Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. But Adelaide isn’t just about food and wine. The city has a strong cultural scene, with festivals all year round, interesting museums, and a passion for sports that can be felt everywhere.
And the best part? Adelaide strikes that rare balance between quality of life and accessibility. You can do (almost) everything on foot, traffic isn’t a nightmare, and the locals are genuinely friendly.
Things to Do in Adelaide
There’s so much to do in Adelaide, but with only two days in the city before heading to Perth, we had to make choices. We ended up skipping Barossa Valley, which was initially part of our plans, as we had already focused a lot on wine tourism in Tasmania. Instead, we decided to spend that time discovering the best experiences within the city.
If you’re also planning a visit and wondering what to do in Adelaide, here’s our list of must-have experiences!
Explore the Adelaide Central Market
The largest indoor market in the Southern Hemisphere and a true foodie paradise! Whenever we travel, we love visiting markets, and this one was no exception. The cultural mix is reflected in the ready-to-eat flavors, the irresistible aromas, and the energy of the vendors. From fresh fruits to artisanal cheeses and international dishes, the choices weren’t easy. We had lunch there, and besides the delicious food, we were left with the best impression of the locals’ friendliness.
Stroll Through Chinatown
A vibrant and lively area where authentic Asian restaurants mix with exotic shops and bright neon signs. If you’re a fan of Asian cuisine, you’ll love wandering through here and discovering amazing flavors – from dumplings to ramen, there’s always something delicious to try.
Shop at Rundle Mall
The city’s shopping heart, perfect for a relaxed stroll. Here, you’ll find everything from big brands to local stores, plus some of Adelaide’s most famous street art, like the iconic Malls Balls. It’s a great spot to feel the city’s energy and maybe even do some shopping.
Visit the Art Gallery of South Australia
A fascinating museum that houses one of the most impressive collections in the country. Entry to the permanent collection is free, making it a must-visit. There are always temporary exhibitions worth checking out, and the building itself is a work of art. The restaurant looked amazing (it was packed when we went!), but we didn’t get the chance to try it.
Stroll Through Adelaide Botanical Garden
A green oasis in the middle of the city, perfect for a peaceful break. The gardens are stunning and organized by themes, each with its own unique atmosphere. The Palm House, a beautiful Victorian greenhouse, is one of the highlights. There are plenty of spots to relax, and a picnic here is always a good idea.
Visit the National Wine Centre of Australia
If you love wine, this is a must-visit! The center gives you a complete insight into Australian winemaking, from grape to bottle. Wine tastings are available, and there’s a restaurant where you can pair a meal with some of the country’s finest wines.
Walk Along the Seafront in Glenelg
Glenelg is one of Adelaide’s most iconic beaches, just 30 minutes from the city center. The waterfront promenade has an incredible vibe, with cafés, bars, and that fresh sea breeze that makes you want to stay all day. The sunset in Glenelg is magical and one of the best ways to end the day.
