    How to Get to Kampot

We traveled from Koh Rong Sanloem to Kampot via Sihanoukville and train, and the experience was unique! But if you are planning your trip, there are several ways to get to Kampot, and we will share the easiest and most comfortable options.

From Koh Rong Sanloem to Kampot

    • Ferry + Train (our choice): We took the ferry from Koh Rong Sanloem to Sihanoukville, a 45 to 60-minute ride. In Sihanoukville, we took a Grab to the train station, where we traveled to Kampot on the Royal Railway train (about 2 hours). The train is comfortable and offers a scenic journey at an affordable price. There is only one train per day, so especially during peak season, it is best to book your seat in advance. The station in Sihanoukville has few services, so bring snacks and drinks with you. You can find a convenience store at the station, but it’s always good to be prepared.
    • When we arrived in Kampot, we learned that there is a new boat service from Sihanoukville to Kampot. We were curious, did some research, but didn’t find many details. However, you can already buy tickets here.
    • Ferry + Bus: If you prefer a more direct route, there are frequent ferries that connect Koh Rong Sanloem to Sihanoukville. From there, buses and minivans are available to take you to Kampot in about 2 hours. This option is practical and economical.

See here how to book your transport option to Kampot from Koh Rong Sanloem.

    From Phnom Penh to Kampot

    • Train: The train between Phnom Penh and Kampot takes about 4.5 hours and offers a peaceful and comfortable journey.
    • Bus/Minivan: Bus and minivan trips between Phnom Penh and Kampot take between 3 to 4 hours. Some popular companies that operate this route are Giant Ibis and Cambotra Express, known for their comfort and reliability.
    • Private Taxi: If you prefer a faster and more comfortable option, you can choose a private taxi. The journey takes about 3 hours but is more expensive.

    Where to Stay in Kampot

Choosing the right accommodation can make all the difference in your Kampot and Kep itinerary. We decided to stay in the heart of Kampot at the Old Cinema Hotel, a boutique hotel that combines unique design, history, and a cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect starting point for exploring what to do in Kampot.

If you’re looking for something closer to nature, there are several eco-lodges and guesthouses along the Kampot River and in the countryside. These places are ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, and an excellent option if you’re planning a Cambodia travel guide focused on nature experiences.

    What to Do in Kampot

Watch the Sunset by the River

As soon as we arrived in Kampot, the first thing we did was stop by 7-Eleven for a snack and then enjoy the sunset by the river near the old bridge. The atmosphere is perfect for relaxing, and there are several cafés with terraces where you can enjoy a beer while taking in the view.

Explore the City and Colonial Architecture

Kampot has a unique charm, with colonial streets and a laid-back vibe that invites exploration. Take a stroll around the city and don’t miss the Old Market, Durian Roundabout, and Kampot Night Market. Every corner has something interesting to discover, from the architecture to the local shops.

Take a Boat Ride on the Kampot River

At sunset, a boat ride on the river is a must-do experience. There are various options, including bamboo boats and private tours. We chose the Lovely Boat, which costs $2.5 and departs near the new bridge. During the ride, drinks are served onboard, making the experience even more enjoyable.

    Visit a Pepper Plantation

Kampot is world-renowned for its high-quality pepper, and visiting a plantation is essential to understand the cultivation process. We recommend visiting places like La Plantation or Bo Tree Farm, where you can learn all about production and taste different varieties of pepper. (For more information on pepper, check out our visit to Kep below.)

    Eat Seafood, Especially Crab

Seafood is a specialty in the region, and in Kampot, you’ll find several options, but the real experience is in Kep. One day, we went there, and we highly recommend the experience of eating fresh seafood, especially the crab. (Find out more about where to eat in Kep below.)

    Day in Kep and Surroundings

How to Get from Kampot to Kep

    • Tuk-Tuk: About 40-50 minutes. Ideal for a scenic ride and a more local experience.
    • Bus or Minivan: About 30-40 minutes. Multiple departures daily for a quicker trip.
    • Rent a Scooter: A flexible option that allows you to explore the region at your own pace.
    • Rent a Tuk-Tuk for the Day: A more flexible, safe, and convenient option to visit several spots outside of Kampot in one day. This was our choice (we arranged the booking at the hotel, which is always safer), and we made a personalized itinerary to see the attractions in Kep. When we visited, it wasn’t possible to use Grab to get to Kep, although there are reports on several blogs from people who managed to use this option.

What to Do in Kep and Surroundings

    Pepper Plantations

The pepper plantations in Kampot are world-renowned, and the most famous ones are La Plantation (which has a shop in central Kampot and Phnom Penh). This one is usually busier, so, as we enjoy less touristy places, we decided to visit BoTree, a smaller, family-run plantation. We loved the experience! Not only did we learn about the pepper production process, but we also did a delicious tasting of different pepper varieties.

    Kampot Salt Flats

Kampot is one of the four provinces in Cambodia that produce salt. The uniqueness of this region is that they alternate between salt and rice production in the same fields, with salt being extracted from thicker crystals due to the intense heat. When we visited, it had rained the day before, so the salt flats were empty, but it was still interesting to learn about the production process.

    Caves

Although we didn’t visit them, the caves are one of the main attractions in the area, with several options to explore.

    Kep Coastal Area

Kep beach is famous for its hikes and stunning views. However, when we visited, the water was a bit dirty, with trash floating, likely due to the currents. Despite that, it was still pleasant to stroll around there.

    Kep Crab Market

The most famous dish in Kep is the fresh crab cooked with Kampot pepper. Kep Crab Market is the best place to try this local dish, especially if you enjoy eating in the market (but be aware, it can get a bit hot on hot days). If you prefer to have lunch in a quieter place with a sea view, we recommend Holy Crab (where we had lunch), an excellent spot to enjoy the crab with a touch of Kampot pepper.

Where to Eat in Kampot and Kep

    Old Cinema Restaurant

Even before deciding to stay at The Old Cinema, we had heard great things about its restaurant. We didn’t miss the chance to try it on our first dinner in Kampot. We opted for a sharing platter called “Kampot,” which honors local products like crab and the famous Kampot peppers, among other delicious bites. Breakfasts are also a must-try. The atmosphere, around an indoor pool, is super pleasant and located away from the market area, making it a perfect spot to relax.

    The Bookish

More than just a café, The Bookish is a second-hand bookstore. It’s well worth stopping by, relaxing on the terrace, and perhaps taking a book or two home. A great spot for those looking for a peaceful and cultural atmosphere.

    Epic Arts Café

Epic Arts Café is a real gem. This social enterprise donates 100% of its profits to charity. The mission of the place is to build an inclusive society where all people are valued, regardless of their ability. Founded in 2006, the café serves a delicious breakfast and flavorful lunches.

On the upper floor, you’ll find the Creations Shop, where you can purchase handmade souvenirs made by the students of the school. By supporting Epic Arts, you’re helping these students not only learn the arts but also become part of a community that believes in their potential. We stopped for lunch, and the place, surrounded by greenery, is perfect for a peaceful and delicious meal.

    Artisans by Atelier Kampot

Located by the river, Artisans by Atelier Kampot is a great spot with a fusion of Cambodian and French cuisine. They offer sharing platters and very good cocktails. The relaxed atmosphere, with a view of the river, makes it the perfect place for a light and tasty meal.

    Cafe Espresso Roastery

The Cafe Espresso Roastery is known for its locally roasted coffee. The space is very cozy and inviting. We stopped by just for a coffee, but the brunch offerings looked quite tempting.

    Holy Crab in Kep

If you’re in Kep and looking for a place to eat crab and seafood, Holy Crab is an excellent option. It’s right next to the market and by the sea. The restaurant is reliable, and the seafood is delicious, making it a must-stop for anyone visiting the city.

How to Get from Kampot to Phnom Penh

    • Bus/Minivan (we chose the bus): The trip takes between 3 to 4 hours, with several departures daily. A practical and economical option.
