During our second round-the-world trip, after exploring Mexico in July 2024, we had the opportunity to visit this Caribbean gem. We discovered that Caye Caulker is not only a place of unique natural beauty but also a place that offers warm hospitality and a vibrant culture, making it a must-visit destination for any traveler.

How Many Days in Caye Caulker
Caye Caulker is a small island, ideal for being explored on foot or by bicycle. Our five-day stay was perfectly sufficient to enjoy everything the island has to offer. In less than a week, we managed to relax, savor the delicious local cuisine, immerse ourselves in the laid-back atmosphere, and enjoy the incredible sea. Each day on the island brought a new discovery, whether in the flavors of local dishes or the aquatic adventures in the crystal-clear waters surrounding Caye Caulker. Therefore, a five-day visit is ideal to make the most of this paradise destination.
How to Get to Caye Caulker
Flights to Caye Caulker
There are two main options for getting to Caye Caulker. The island has a small airport with small plane flights connecting to Belize City and San Pedro. This is a quick and convenient way to reach the island, especially for those with limited time or who prefer to travel by plane. Search here for flights to Caye Caulker.
Water Taxis to Caye Caulker
A popular alternative is the water taxis. Various companies operate these small boats, offering regular services to and from Belize City, San Pedro, or even boat and bus transport to San Ignacio or even to Flores in Guatemala. The water taxis provide a scenic and pleasant trip, allowing travelers to appreciate the beauty around. We used this option to enter and exit Caye Caulker towards San Ignacio.
Traveling from Mexico to Caye Caulker
For those coming from Mexico, the journey involves a boat ride from Chetumal. This route includes a stop in San Pedro to handle immigration procedures before continuing to Caye Caulker.
Travel Time
On departure, we took a boat to Belize City. Whether you’re going to or leaving from Belize City, the boat ride takes approximately 30 minutes, making it a convenient option for travelers.

Where to Stay
Caye Caulker, being a small island, doesn’t require us to divide accommodation by zones but rather by proximity to The Split. This area is the heart of the island, with more movement, commerce, and dining options. If you’re looking for a livelier spot, stay close to The Split. Those who prefer a quieter environment can choose accommodations further south on the island.
During our stay, we chose a small budget hotel called Barefoot Beach Belize, located away from the center. Despite the distance, the hotel offered free bicycles, which allowed us to explore every corner of the island easily. The bikes were great for getting around and enjoying everything Caye Caulker has to offer.

- Best Time to Visit: We visited Caye Caulker during the rainy season. Although we didn’t encounter much rain, the main advantage of this season is that prices are more affordable than in the high season, and the atmosphere is more relaxed, perfect for unwinding. However, the downside is that many things close on the island during this time. In the high season, which runs from November to April, the weather is drier, and more activities are available, but it’s also busier and more expensive.

- Relaxed Lifestyle: The island lifestyle is relaxed. There’s no point in rushing, as you might have to wait 1 to 2 hours for your order at the restaurant. Embrace the local tranquility and take the time to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
