How to Get to Lake Atitlán
Getting to Lake Atitlán is relatively easy, especially if you opt for land transportation. We chose a van from Antigua, which dropped us off directly in San Marcos La Laguna. We returned via van as well, this time to Guatemala City. We had a small hiccup that required us to take a TukTuk to San Pablo to catch the van, but the shuttle company handled everything.
The trip took about 4 hours each way, though the time may vary depending on traffic and whether you’re among the first or last to be picked up. Vans are a popular option among travelers in Guatemala, offering connections to many locations with the convenience of door-to-door service. You can check all the options here.
Where to Stay at Lake Atitlán
The two most popular areas to stay at Lake Atitlán are San Pedro La Laguna and San Marcos La Laguna. San Pedro is known for being a lively destination, especially among backpackers, with a vibrant nightlife. San Marcos, on the other hand, is perfect for those seeking a more tranquil and relaxed atmosphere, famous for its community dedicated to holistic practices, vegetarian restaurants, and a unique vibe.
Regardless of your choice, make sure your accommodation has a view of the lake. After all, the main attraction is Lake Atitlán itself, and waking up to that view is an experience you won’t want to miss.
We stayed at the El Dragon Hotel in San Marcos La Laguna, a true piece of paradise by the lake. With rooms offering breathtaking views, relaxation areas, a pool, jacuzzi, and even a game room, this hotel has everything to make your stay unforgettable.
Breakfast is à la carte and prepared with local ingredients, adding even more value to the experience.
