What to Do in Bicheno: A 3-Day Itinerary

What to do in Bicheno? This was the question we kept asking as we planned the start of our adventure in Tasmania, Australia. Traveling through this island is amazing but requires some strategy – especially if you want to keep your budget under control. As soon as we landed, our first stop was a supermarket in Sorell, where we stocked up on breakfast supplies and snacks for the first few days.

With everything ready, we finally headed to Bicheno. Well… almost. First, we made a detour to Kate’s Berry Farm to try their famous scones and homemade jams. Bad luck, it was closed. Next time! If you’re planning your visit, keep reading – here you’ll discover everything about what to do in Bicheno.

Why choose Bicheno?

We chose Bicheno as our base, and it was the perfect decision. This coastal village has everything: amazing beaches, historical trails, and an ideal location for exploring vineyards and the stunning Freycinet National Park.

Must-visit spots in Bicheno include Redbill Beach and Waubs Beach, perfect for a leisurely walk or just relaxing. We also did the Bicheno History Trail, a laid-back way to learn more about the local history. And of course, you can’t leave without visiting the famous Bicheno Blowhole, where the waves create an impressive natural show.

The magic of Freycinet National Park

On the last day, we dedicated ourselves to exploring Freycinet National Park – a place that was everything we imagined and more. We started at Friendly Beaches, where the contrast between the white sand and the blue sea looks straight out of a postcard.

Wineglass Bay - What to do in Bicheno

Then, we went to Coles Bay for a coffee at the Esplanade, with a view of the bay. And of course, the big highlight: the viewpoint of Wineglass Bay. The hike up takes about 30 minutes (one way), but believe me, it’s worth every step. From up there, the view makes you feel small in front of the vastness of nature. If you go to Freycinet, don’t miss this experience.

Where to eat in Bicheno and surrounding areas

  • Food & Brew Bicheno – Simple but spot-on. We had an amazing pizza and a classic fish and chips that left us satisfied.
  • The Farm Shed – A wine bar offering tastings of regional wines accompanied by cheese and charcuterie platters. Perfect for ending the day with a glass in hand.
  • Granite Freycinet (Coles Bay) – A café with delicious banana bread. They also offer light meal options.
  • Lobster Shack – For seafood lovers, this place is a must. The lobster roll is fresh and delicious, but they also have options like fish and chips.

Must-visit vineyards in the region

Bicheno is part of the Great Eastern Drive, one of the largest wine-producing areas – the East Coast wine trail, so we had to try some of them.

  • Milton Vineyard – Free tastings, but if you want something special, you can try the reserve wines for 10 AUD.
  • Craigie Knowe Vineyard – In addition to wine tastings, they have a restaurant for lunch.
  • Devil’s Corner – More touristy, but the lookout makes up for it. They also have a pizzeria and a wine tasting room.

Where to stay in Bicheno

  • Budget: Bicheno East Coast Holiday Park – Chalets and camping areas near the beach. Simple, quiet, and affordable.
  • Mid-range: Beachend Accommodation – This is where we stayed. A small, comfortable apartment with a fully equipped kitchenette and a quiet location. Perfect for relaxation.
  • Luxury: Cod Rock Point – A sophisticated property with ocean views and easy access to coastal trails.

With stunning landscapes, great food and wine, and accommodation options for all tastes, Bicheno is the kind of place you’ll want to return to.
