Mumbai was the first city we visited in the south of India, right after a stop in Hyderabad. With the changes we made to our itinerary along the way, we ended up having only two full days to explore this vibrant metropolis, and we were super excited about what to do in Mumbai.
Mumbai is a city that buzzes with energy, organized chaos, and a fascinating blend of modernity and tradition. From its impressive colonial architecture to streets bursting with colors and flavors, every corner of this city offers a new experience that challenges you to dive headfirst into this adventure. It’s a place where skyscrapers rise beside ancient temples, and where street markets are brimming with life, bringing a contrast to your journey that only India can provide.
Upon arrival, we immediately noticed that Mumbai has a very different vibe from North India. Its atmosphere is unique: it’s chaotic, yet there’s a certain order within the chaos. It’s not just the city’s pace that stands out; it’s the people, the coastal landscapes, the street fashion, and even the aromas of spices in the bazaars that make everything special. Mumbai is a renewed, modern India, yet still deeply rooted in its traditions.

How to Get to Mumbai
We arrived in Mumbai by plane from Hyderabad. The train seemed like a long and tiring option, so we chose a flight that cost us around 30€, including an onboard meal — a great deal, considering the time and convenience we gained.
When you land at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, the city will seem like a sea of chaos, but don’t worry: there are efficient ways to get to your destination without getting lost in the crowd. We took an Uber right outside the airport, and the process was just like what we experienced in Hyderabad — convenient and hassle-free. If you haven’t read it yet, check out our post about what to do in Hyderabad, where we share more valuable tips!
Other Ways to Get to Mumbai
If you’re planning your trip and want to explore different options, here are some alternatives:
By Bus
Traveling by bus to Mumbai can be an experience in itself. The road connections are quite efficient, especially if you’re coming from nearby cities like Pune, Goa, or Bangalore. The bus network is vast, and you have several categories to choose from, ranging from super-economical local buses to more comfortable options like sleeper buses, which allow you to rest during the journey. If you have the time and want to soak in the Indian landscapes, this could be an adventure worth having.
By Train
Traveling by train in India is an experience you’ll never forget. Although it can be time-consuming — depending on how far you’re coming from — it’s a fantastic way to see the country’s interior and share moments with locals. Indian Railways has one of the largest rail networks in the world, and there are various types of trains: from basic ones to those offering more comfort, even air conditioning. It’s always a good idea to book in advance, especially if you’re traveling during festivals, as tickets sell out fast. Check out how to buy train tickets in India.
Choose the option that best fits your itinerary and budget, but remember: Mumbai is always a surprise, whether you arrive by plane, bus, or train. Either way, the adventure is guaranteed!
What to Do in Mumbai?
Coomaraswamy Hall (Prince of Wales Museum): Imposing Architecture and Fascinating Collection
We started our day exploring the area around Coomaraswamy Hall, part of the Prince of Wales Museum. The first thing that impressed us was the exterior architecture — a true spectacle for the eyes, with grand details and a blend of styles that transports you back in time. The entry fee for foreigners is about 700 rupees, and inside, there’s an incredible collection worth taking your time to explore.
Art Plaza Gallery: Outdoor Art
Leaving the museum, we headed toward Rajabai Clock Tower, passing by the Art Plaza Gallery. This vibrant area is a true outdoor art festival, with various artists showcasing their work on the street. We recommend walking slowly and absorbing the colors and details of the paintings, which reveal the city’s pulsating creativity.
Rajabai Clock Tower: A Touch of London in Mumbai
Continuing our walk, it’s impossible not to notice the Rajabai Clock Tower. This area of Colaba features architecture that immediately reminds you of London — the British influence is unmistakable. The clock tower resembles Big Ben and adds historical charm to the cityscape.
Oval Maidan: The Cricket Field and Local Joy
Right next to Rajabai Clock Tower, we found Oval Maidan, a large field where young locals play cricket. It’s worth taking a break, sitting on the grass, and soaking in the energy of the place. The shyness of the kids quickly turns into a smile when they come to greet foreigners, with a warmth that melts your heart.
Marine Drive: Calm by the Sea
After a refreshing walk, we continued along Dinshaw Vacha Road to the iconic Marine Drive. Along the way, we found a supermarket, Star Market, perfect for grabbing snacks or any essentials. We loved the idea of visiting supermarkets as if they were tourist attractions! Strolling along Marine Drive is a relaxing experience, an escape from the city hustle, with breathtaking views of the new Mumbai skyline.
Sitaram Deora Chowk: Heritage Architecture and Urban Views
The buildings along Marine Drive are part of a UNESCO heritage site, and as we walked, we soaked in both the urban beauty and sea views. We passed Sitaram Deora Chowk, where the preservation of Victorian-style architecture is a true masterpiece.
Churchgate: Lunch Break
After our seaside walk, we headed away from the coastal area at Sitaram Deora Chowk with a clear plan: lunch at Gaylord. Be mindful of which side of the street you walk on, as there is a divider in the middle, making it impossible to cross without taking a detour.
Kitab Khana: Iconic Bookstore with Specialty Coffee
Next stop: Kitab Khana, one of Mumbai’s best bookstores. The atmosphere is charming, and inside, there is a café called Subko, where you can enjoy excellent specialty coffee and mouthwatering snacks.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus: A Majestic Building
We continued exploring and reached the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. This building is a Mumbai icon, an architectural masterpiece full of life and movement. Along the way, we enjoyed wandering through the busy streets, absorbing the city’s vibrant energy.
Kala Ghoda: Food and Culture to End the Day
We wrapped up our day in the Kala Ghoda neighborhood, a hotspot full of restaurants and shops begging to be explored. This area is perfect for one last dive into Colaba’s vibrant energy, leaving us wanting to come back and explore even more.
Gateway to India
The Gateway of India was built in 1924 to commemorate King George V and Queen Mary’s visit to India in 1911. This iconic Mumbai monument is an architectural marvel in Indo-Saracenic style, blending Islamic and Hindu design elements. Its imposing arches and the stunning view of the Arabian Sea make this spot a must-visit for anyone exploring the city.
It’s the perfect place to soak up local history and culture, and it’s also the main departure point for boats heading to the mysterious Elephanta Caves. We started our second day here, after a well-deserved, late breakfast, ready to dive into more of Mumbai’s vibrant energy.
Less Touristic Neighborhoods
From the Gateway to India, we headed south on Colaba Causeway. If the avenue is lively during the day, it becomes even more vibrant at night with the market extending from the beginning. This time, though, we wanted to venture beyond and explore some of the more authentic, less touristy neighborhoods in the southern area.
There, we observed the authentic daily life, far from the tourist hustle of northern Colaba. We saw people doing their shopping, kids playing on the street, and we felt like we truly captured the essence of Mumbai. We took a break at Star Anise Patisserie for a refreshing coffee, and with our stomachs asking for more, we ended up having lunch at Kuai Kitchen, where we savored delicious Asian cuisine.

Where to Eat in Mumbai
Café Mondegar: Where the Jukebox Music Never Stops
Café Mondegar is the kind of place that takes you back in time, full of stories and memorable moments. It’s frequented by both travelers and locals, and the unique vibe hits you the moment you walk in. Did you know that Mondegar was the first place in Mumbai to have a jukebox? Yes, many years ago, and to this day, music keeps the atmosphere lively, with classics echoing off the café’s historic walls.
The menu is an interesting mix that pleases all kinds of travelers. If you’re in the mood to try local food, you’re in the right spot. But if you feel like switching it up, they also serve Chinese dishes and more continental options. Oh, and here’s a surprise: Café Mondegar is one of the few places in Mumbai where you can order a well-done steak, something that’s not easy to find in this vibrant city.
One of the things that make Mondegar even more special is its walls, which tell an incredible visual story. They were all illustrated by Mario Miranda, a legendary artist from Goa, whose drawings bring humor and art to the space, transporting you to a world full of color and life.
So, if you’re planning your trip to Mumbai, Café Mondegar is one of those places you just can’t miss. Come for the food, stay for the history, and lose yourself in the jukebox music while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of this city icon.
Gaylord: Fine Dining Without Breaking the Bank
Gaylord Restaurant is the kind of place where you can have a sophisticated experience without blowing your budget. The chic interior is impressive, but it’s the charming outdoor seating area that won us over, especially for a relaxed lunch. The service quality is impeccable, and the ambiance perfectly complements the delicious food they serve. This part of the city is great for exploring, making it an even more appealing stop. Oh, and don’t miss the bakery: just looking at it makes you want to try everything!
K Rustoms: Old-School Ice Cream Sandwiches
On our way to Gaylord, K Rustoms immediately caught our eye. It’s not your typical modern or fancy spot, but the crowd of locals savoring simple ice cream sandwiches convinced us to come back for dessert. The man at the door, with a firm voice, told us, “Don’t look there, the flavors are on the whiteboard!” From a list of dozens of options, only 4 or 5 were available. It made us think they must be super fresh. We chose a pistachio one, which was simple, floral, refreshing, and incredibly delicious.
Mockingbird Cafe Bar: A Promising Atmosphere
While we were devouring our ice cream, Mockingbird Cafe Bar caught our attention. We didn’t go in because a massive central divider on the street would have required a detour, but the place looked great. The food looked tempting, and the atmosphere seemed perfect for unwinding. It’s on our list for the next visit!
Colaba Social: Laid-Back Dining and Global Flavors
We dined twice at Colaba Social, and it’s one of those places where you immediately feel the vibe for sharing a few beers (or not, as we’ll explain shortly). The mix of flavors on the menu is interesting: from Indian dishes to Middle Eastern and even Oriental touches. We tried some masala baos and a mezze-style platter with Middle Eastern flavors. Everything was delicious, but we were caught off guard by the “dry day,” and the much-anticipated beer didn’t show up — no alcohol allowed that day!
Café Leopold: History and Resilience
Café Leopold is a classic, and not just for its pastries or snacks. It was at the center of a tragic attack in 2008, and even today, you can see the bullet marks, like on the famous glass window. We couldn’t visit this time, but the location’s history and symbolism of resilience continue to make it a must-visit spot in Mumbai.
ARAKU Coffee
We stopped for a coffee at Araku because the interior really grabbed our attention. The modern design, with details reminiscent of the coffee plantations’ landscape, drew us in immediately. And it was worth it! The coffee was excellent, the atmosphere super pleasant, and we even eyed the food menu — it looked very promising, with options ranging from light dishes to more substantial specialties. It’s definitely on our list to explore on a future visit.
Star Anise Patisserie
We stopped by Star Anise Patisserie for a coffee and a delightful treat. This place is perfect for those who appreciate fine pastries and light meals. The selection of cakes and tarts is mouthwatering. The tranquil atmosphere invites you to sit, relax, and savor some of the best pastries Mumbai has to offer. If you enjoy long breakfasts or a memorable afternoon tea, this is a must-visit.
Kuai Kitchen
If you’re looking for an alternative to traditional Indian food, Kuai Kitchen is a fantastic choice for Asian cuisine. The restaurant has a vibrant, modern atmosphere with decor that transports you to another place. We loved the fresh, bold flavors we tried — each dish was a surprise in the best way. It stands out for its creative offerings, and every plate seems to tell a story.
Kitchen Garden
For those seeking healthier options, Kitchen Garden has some great offerings. This place has become a favorite for those who enjoy a good açaí bowl or a flavorful salad. Everything is made with fresh, and whenever possible, organic ingredients. The decor is simple and laid-back, creating the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a healthy meal at your own pace. It’s a real standout in Mumbai’s food scene. We tried the toasts and crepes, and they were excellent.
Subko Coffee
We came across this spot in Mumbai twice: first, at the Kitab Khana bookstore, and then again right at the entrance of Hotel Abode. Hotel Abode immediately caught our attention — it seemed like a great accommodation option, but unfortunately, it was out of our budget. Still, Subko Coffee is the real highlight.
Their specialty coffee is really good and maintains a consistent flavor that isn’t easy to find. The ambiance is peaceful, ideal for relaxing, grabbing a snack, or even catching up on some writing — like we’re doing now! It’s worth a visit, whether you’re looking for a spot to unwind or inspiration to write something.
Other Recommended Spots (Yet to Explore):
- Jimmy Boy Restaurant & Cake Shop Fort — We’ve heard great things about this iconic restaurant, known for its Parsi cuisine and delicious cakes. It’s on our list!
- Krishna — Another spot that was suggested to us. It’s famous for authentic vegetarian meals, and we can’t wait to try it out.
- Khyber — A classic that comes highly recommended, especially if you want to enjoy North Indian dishes in an elegant setting.

In the Colaba area, it’s common to see children asking tourists for money. Local authorities advise against giving money, as it perpetuates a cycle of dependency. Instead, if you want to help, consider supporting organizations that provide direct aid to the communities.
Watch Your Belongings: Safety First
As in any busy tourist area, in Mumbai, there’s always a risk of pickpockets or people looking for opportunities. Keep your belongings in sight. Avoid keeping valuables in back pockets, and don’t hang backpacks or bags on the backs of chairs while eating or drinking.
Transportation: Safe Choices
Transportation in India requires some caution. Avoid unauthorized taxis; apps like Uber and Ola are safer and more reliable options. Another alternative is to ask your accommodation to arrange transportation, especially if you need to go somewhere at night or to a more remote location.
Water Consumption: Be Cautious
Tap water in Mumbai isn’t safe to drink, and even some restaurants may serve unfiltered water. Always choose bottled water and make sure the bottles are sealed. This precaution can make a big difference in avoiding an unpleasant stomach upset.
Street Food: Enjoy with Caution
Street food in Mumbai is tempting and an essential part of the city’s experience. But choose wisely! Prioritize recommended places or consider joining a food tour, where you can try Mumbai’s flavors with a much lower risk. These tours are led by local guides who know the best and safest spots to eat.
