Why We Visited Puerto Viejo
We decided to visit Puerto Viejo to experience Costa Rica’s famous Caribbean beaches, which we had always heard were fantastic. Additionally, the village’s relaxed and welcoming atmosphere made us feel it would be the perfect place to start our adventure in the country. And it didn’t disappoint; there’s no shortage of things to do in Puerto Viejo.
Best Time to Visit Puerto Viejo
The best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. However, we visited during the rainy season, also known as the “green season,” when everything is lush and vibrant. We were lucky that it only rained at night, so our activities weren’t affected.
How to Get to Puerto Viejo
Getting There by Car
- San José Airport: We entered Costa Rica through San José Airport, where we rented a car.
- Vehicle: We opted for an SUV since it was the rainy season, and we might encounter challenging roads. You can check out various options here. Our Choice
We chose to stay in the center because we wanted tranquility while still being within walking distance of the main attractions. Since we rented a car, we could easily explore the beaches and follow our list of things to do in Puerto Viejo. You can also rent bicycles or scooters, although a bike ride from the center to Manzanillo could take over an hour.
Our accommodation stood out for its tranquility and amenities, such as a communal kitchen and an inviting outdoor space, perfect for relaxing.

This fishing village has a dark sand beach worth visiting. Don’t miss the chance to see the nearby shipwreck.

Watch the sunset while enjoying a drink and a snack at one of the many seaside spots. The colors in the sky are simply magical.
