    How to Get to Udaipur

We arrived in Udaipur after our adventure in Jodhpur. There used to be a direct train between Udaipur and Jodhpur, but now you need to switch trains, making the journey longer. We chose to book a car with a private driver from our hotel in Jodhpur for a smoother trip, and to visit the Ranakpur Jain Temple along the way. The road is in good condition for most of the route, taking about 3 hours to the temple and another 2 hours to Udaipur.

Excited to explore the “City of Lakes,” we opted for a practical and comfortable travel solution since the direct train service was no longer available. At our hotel in Jodhpur, we arranged a private car, which allowed a seamless trip and a visit to the stunning Ranakpur Jain Temple en route. It’s a worthwhile stop!

The road between Jodhpur and Udaipur is generally good, making the journey enjoyable. The drive takes around 3 hours to Ranakpur and another 2 hours to Udaipur, offering views of Rajasthan’s scenic landscapes, rocky hills, and traditional villages.

Planning this route? We highly recommend this option. It’s flexible, allows a fantastic stop, and once in Udaipur, you’ll be ready to dive into the city’s lakeside magic!

    What to Do in Udaipur

    Visit the City Palace

Start by exploring the magnificent City Palace, a lakeside masterpiece on Lake Pichola. The architecture is breathtaking, with intricate details and a museum filled with rich history. Entry to the complex is 50 rupees, with an additional 400 rupees for the museum and palace interiors. We entered from the south side, which offers stunning views, but expect crowds and some lines inside the museum.

    Admire Jag Mandir

Imagine a floating palace in the middle of Lake Pichola… That’s Jag Mandir, famous for its surreal beauty. You can get a great view of it from the south side of the City Palace.

    Explore Jagdish Chowk

Exiting the palace through the Tripoliya Gate, you’ll find yourself in bustling Jagdish Chowk. This area is filled with souvenir and handicraft shops, creating a vibrant festival of colors and aromas. If you enjoy street food, there are plenty of great options here too.

    Visit Jagdish Temple

Things to do in Udaipur - Jagdish Temple

Right next door is the Jagdish Temple, a 17th-century Hindu temple that will amaze you with its intricate carvings. It’s a place that truly radiates spirituality.

    Stroll at Gangaur Ghat

After visiting the temple, head to Gangaur Ghat. This spot is not only architecturally impressive but also offers breathtaking views of Lake Pichola. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Have Lunch at a Rooftop Terrace Overlooking Lake Pichola

From Gangaur Ghat, we continued walking around the lake, looking for a good terrace spot for lunch. We ended up at Jheel’s Ginger, where the pizzas are great, and the view is absolutely worth it. Even if not for the food, go for the view!

    Explore the Old City

With full bellies, we wandered through the lively streets of the Old City. Every corner here offers a surprise, with shops and an energetic atmosphere that is contagious.

    See the Clock Tower (Ghantaghar)

In the heart of the Old City, you’ll find the iconic Clock Tower. It’s a city landmark and a great point of reference.

You can’t leave Udaipur without tasting Rajasthani delicacies. While most restaurants serve similar dishes, dining on a rooftop terrace with a view of the lake is a must. We stayed at a hotel with a rooftop restaurant, making it the perfect way to unwind in the evening. One thing to note: many restaurants are vegetarian-only, so it’s good to check in advance.

Watch the Bagore Ki Haveli Show

If you enjoy traditional dance and music, this show is a must-see. Unfortunately, we missed it as tickets sold out before we could buy them. If you’re interested, book two or three days in advance to secure your spot.

On our way from Jodhpur to Udaipur, we stopped at the Ranakpur Jain Temple. This marble temple is absolutely magnificent. If you’re traveling by car between the two cities, it’s well worth the visit. Entry is 200 rupees per person, with an additional fee of 100 rupees for each mobile phone or camera you bring inside. Note that leather items, such as wallets or belts, are not allowed.
