Why We Visited Antigua Guatemala

We decided to include Antigua Guatemala in our itinerary because it is a city full of charm and colorful houses, which we love. The scenic surrounding landscapes of the volcanoes were also one of the reasons. In our research, there was no shortage of things to do in Antigua Guatemala, so it was also an excellent opportunity to experience everything the city has to offer. Additionally, Antigua was on the way to Lake Atitlán, another must-visit destination in Guatemala.

How to Get to Antigua Guatemala

We were coming from Flores and, although it is possible to take a van from there, we chose to fly the longest part of the journey since the flight price was affordable. We flew from Flores to Guatemala City and then took a shuttle from the airport to Antigua. You can see the options here.

Where We Stayed

Antigua Guatemala offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxurious boutique hotels to cozy hostels. Staying in the historic center is ideal for those who wish to explore the city on foot, with easy access to major attractions like the Cathedral of Santiago and the Santa Catalina Arch. Boutique hotels in the center offer a unique experience, combining colonial charm with modern amenities.

For those who prefer a more economical experience, the hostels and guesthouses around the center are excellent options. These accommodations are usually quieter and offer an opportunity to meet other travelers. Regardless of the choice, it is advisable to book in advance, especially during the high season, to ensure the best possible stay in Antigua Guatemala.

We opted for a small apartment on the outskirts of Antigua’s historic center; it was economical and perfectly served the purpose.
