What to Do in Miami: 7 Unforgettable Days

O que fazer em Miami South Beach, casa de madeira do nadador-salvador

We had wanted to visit Miami for a long time, and during this second trip around the world, the perfect opportunity arose. While researching flights for the next leg of our journey, from Lima to Europe or Asia, we found an excellent opportunity: a direct flight from Lima to Miami, with a direct connection to Lisbon. This find turned out to be the push we needed to sketch out an itinerary and make a list of things to do in Miami.

What to do in Miami is a common question for those visiting the city for the first time. Known for its vibrant lifestyle, iconic beaches, and the blend of cultures reflected on every corner, Miami is a destination that combines sunshine, art, and an enviable food scene. From the famous Art Deco architecture of South Beach to the creative energy of Wynwood, the city offers countless experiences that will enrich any trip. If you’re looking for a travel itinerary in Miami that covers the main attractions of the city, this 7-day plan is perfect for exploring the best of Florida.

With travel dates set for mid-October, we hoped to avoid the impacts of the rainy season and hurricanes, which can affect the region. We planned a whole week to explore what to do in Miami, including stops in Key Largo, Key West, and, of course, the vibrant city of Miami.

However, our travel itinerary in Miami was impacted by Hurricane Milton, which coincidentally fell precisely on the dates we planned to visit the Keys. Since there was a risk of flooding, we ended up replanning our itinerary and, instead of exploring the Keys and Miami South Beach, we adapted the plan to also include Downtown Miami, as the weather forecasts were more favorable for that area.

Thus, we adjusted our Miami itinerary to explore South Beach and the cosmopolitan life of Downtown Miami, ensuring we would have a total of 7 unforgettable days to discover what to do in Miami.

What is the Best Time to Visit Miami?

The best time to visit Miami is between November and April, when the weather is milder and rainfall is less frequent. This is also the high season, with many tourists seeking Florida’s sunshine to escape the winter. Average temperatures range from 68-77°F, ideal for enjoying the beach and outdoor activities. From June to November, Miami enters hurricane season, where strong winds and rainfall can be more frequent, making visits less predictable. However, it’s also a time with fewer tourists and more affordable prices, making it possible to explore things to do in Miami more peacefully.

Is Miami a Safe City?

Miami is considered a relatively safe city for tourists, especially in more touristic areas like South Beach, Downtown, and Wynwood. However, it’s important to stay vigilant, especially at night, and avoid less crowded areas. As in any big city, we recommend bringing only essentials with you and staying attentive to your belongings. For greater peace of mind, we also recommend travel insurance, such as Heymondo, which can be a great help in case of unexpected events, as medical assistance costs in the USA are quite high.

Best Areas to Stay in Miami

The best areas to stay in Miami are:

  • Miami Downtown: Ideal for those seeking a more urban experience, with easy access to museums, restaurants, and bars. It’s a great base for exploring Wynwood and the Design District and discovering what to do in Miami’s central area.
  • South Beach: Perfect for those who want to be close to the beach and nightlife. The proximity to Ocean Drive makes this area very popular among tourists and offers various options to discover what to do in Miami by the seaside.

What is Miami like for LGBTQ+ travelers?

Miami is one of the most welcoming destinations for the LGBTQ+ community in the United States. With a vibrant LGBTQ+ scene in South Beach and several events throughout the year, such as the Miami Beach Pride, the city is inclusive and celebrates diversity. South Beach, in particular, is a favorite spot for those looking for bars, parties, and a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, there are several hotels, like Axel Beach Miami, known for their hospitality and inclusive atmosphere. This is just another aspect to consider when exploring what to do in Miami.

Miami Itinerary

Arrival in Miami (Days 1 to 3)

We arrived in Miami from Lima, in Peru, and decided to head straight to Miami Downtown. We took the train from the intermodal terminal to Miami Downtown. We stayed at Yotel Miami Downtown, a modern hotel that is very well-located for those looking to explore what to do in Miami Downtown.

Staying at Eurostars Langford (Days 1 to 3)

When we rescheduled the itinerary, we ended up being somewhat limited by the available accommodation options. Due to the hurricane and the lack of forecasts indicating its direct impact on the city, many people from Florida ended up relocating here, resulting in limited hotel options. The Eurostars Langford is a four-star hotel with mid-range prices. The comfort is excellent, and its location in downtown provides easy access to various attractions.
